Firstly a very happy new year to my readers and followers, I appreciate your time and your custom over 2014.
2014 was quite a horrible year, a tough year, and most annoyingly a little unproductive. Without getting out my chamber orchestra, to produce melancholic string stabs, I had some bad news of an illness in my family, (she is ok now).. so there was a lot of myself travelling across back and forth in the U.K to be with my family, was very depressing (to be honest) But hey! I carried on, then bam! in april I was penniless.
Sales had dried up, work flow stopped and I had to end up using a foodbanks for survival. The year of myself taking my eye off the ball seemed the best way to describe this period. After trying to get back to some kind of work schedule, I was stricken down with Sciatica, and a really bout of bad back (I have a bulge in my lower spine.) this led to me being pretty much house bound, for 3 months. The studio was empty of excitement and productivity, as I could not even sit in my office chair. Standing for more than a minute was quite impossible.. ahem. well i have been tested and probed and had a MRI scan to check for cancer, and everything is ok!
Well enough of this doom and gloom, I am back in the studio working on new paintings. I am still obsessed by placement of buildings on the landscape.. and still obsessed by colour, and the Golden Section.
There is some exciting news coming. and it is pretty great, But I dont want to jinx anything by yabbering on about it. But lets just say, after the German show last year, I have got the taste for it, and Hollis Art is branching out to another country, in the autumn. (very excited).
Also As you well know I sell work, that is how I survive. I sell prints A4- A2 size. Contact me if you have any queries about purchasing work. It is a good time to buy as I don’t sell exclusively through a gallery, so I can charge very reasonable rates. But this will not be forever as I have already lined up some galleries for 2015. So If you want my work on YOUR wall , then going through myself, would be value for money.
Also I have a 3 of my large landscapes from “Sky Blue Grey” exhibition still for sale. Also some older portraits, again contact me. for your reference you can get to me at email@example.com
Ok as you all know I don’t wear my heart on my sleeve. But I think I need to explain everything as some collectors and readers have been concerned. Well lets take 2015, ride it like no tomorrow, and lets have fun, warmth and love for 2015.
Avid readers of my blog know that I adore Jame’s Austin Murray’s work. From His protest Against Damien Hirst. To his huge blackest ever black paintings.
I Met this piece of art , and I took it home. I am now a proud owner of a James Austin Murray Piece , as yet Untitled. It hangs in my Living Room and the interplay of light hitting the surface shows different hues every time.. it is constantly shifting, depending on the light ambiance and my mood. It is singularly the best piece of art that I own.
Each Morning I can smell the Linseed , the paint, and somehow a little bit of NYC. In my home.. that is Good Magic.

Ok.. This is my first blog of the year! But it is a sales driven Blog (yawn) , rather than My usual Posting of new work (yay!). I have a nice thing coming up. I was asked by YHA organisation to show my Art for a month in their Main building in Bristol (just by the Arnolfini (gallery) and the historic docks.
I will be showing my Montage work for the first time, as a complete show. I do have work in CO-LAB at the moment. But this time I will have ALL of my montage art on show at the YHA, as well as some older paintings. My month starts from 5th April to the 2nd May. I will be posting more dates and promo stuff soon, so do watch this space.
For the first time I will be selling smaller prints. On offer will be A3 & A4 Framed Signed prints.. and you can grab yourself a signed colour of splurge on Glorious 250gsm Museum quality paper from £?? – £95!!
It is a great thing to do, as In the early 90’s the YHA started showing Paintings from local artists.. and I used to go into their Cafe.. to look at such great work.. they have always supported local talent.
In Bristol, in the early 90’s there was nothing like today.. no local artists showing work.. no one dared. But the YHA, Did, and have always done .. and now after so many years since I stepped into their gallery.. I will be now showing work there.. Chuffed is the right phrase I am thinking of.
Ok.. more news soon.. (just busy sourcing frames, mounts.. etc etc).
Today Me and a good friend went off to Lea Woods In Bristol to take some photos of “A weird and often talked about” Ritual or shamanic activity , that has been told to us for a while now. We actually thought the whole story of Witches in the woods quite funny , and quite stupid, and far fetched in anyone’s stretch of a folly. But I do Like a story.. and if it includes witchcraft and magick, then I am kinda into this.
What happened was quite amusing at first, but then took a more sinister turn , as we stumbled upon spaces that had obviously been used for another purpose. I am still trying to work out if this was a joke or the stories are very very true!
I have included some pics.. but I kinda got freaked out and left.. But afterwards we both agreed that we should go back and take more photos. We even discussed camping in the woods at night, so we (actually ME, Could put this sorry “silly tale” to an end.
What I quite loved (as an artist) was that a lot looked very “staged” and with “Bower Ashton Art dept” only 10 minutes walk away.. I put this down to an “Art Prank” Anyway .. pics below.. and a very interesting day.. tho I do admit I was really spooked.
We found two camps, one had five poles in the ground, and a burnt “Stake” in the middle.
outside camp number two.. we found this odd.. quite freaky Effigy of ??
Next to camp number one we found a rock with a flat surface with feathers carefully distributed over the surface. Now this could have been a stoat kill.. but a bit too tidy.
Any comments or anyone that has more stories of the Lea Woods Witches.. please contact me.. as this was one odd and scary day.
As seen in an earlier post, I am working on self portraits.. it did start out as an exercise for a competition, now I am getting a little fixated with, the whole idea of portraying “Myself” I really feel uncomfortable, looking at my body/face. So The idea Is about conveying how I see myself and maybe how others view me, without producing a “Generic” Image . The images are applied montage, from my earlier paintings, plus the rabbit mask, hands etc are me.. so you are getting a self portrait.
Like a rabid dog, with a scrawny piece of bone.. I will not let it go, until I am satisfied, but then I question “Am I ever satisfied?” Urghh it is a weird thing to do, and once you start , you get into the dilemma of “Is that me?” etc.
For an example; If you was offered a sum of money to describe yourself, how would you start? Because as you work through this, it does get harder.. questioning your Ideas of the self, and “Am I being truthful etc can send you bonkers. So here is a few ideas.. and I am still not happy! I have until July 29th to submit my artwork.. In the meantime.. can I get out of this body now! and paint kittens and flowers in vases? As always , any comments would be great!
Hello, I have been a bit lax lately updating this page, without any good reason, apart from not having the time (bad excuse I know).
Anyway It has been a good June. I hooked up with Simone Kidner from PAPER magazine, and CO-LAB, and apart from other things; I now have 2 Prints In the shop.. An A2 framed “First Blow struck” for £120. and an A2 Unframed print, “Third Blow Struck” for only £60. The shop/ gallery is amazing.. with a fine selection of artwork for sale, Inc Dicey, James Starr .. plus loads of Bristol Artists. There is also Clothes, and cawfee served from a “Tuc Tuc” 🙂
As mentioned before, Simone also runs PAPER Magazine, and even though future issues are secure.. they want to make the magazine AD FREE! So more art and fine pieces of writing will grace the pages, rather than companies trying to sell you stuff. So they have began a Kick Starter project.. to help fund future publications.. without those pesky Ad’s. I feature quite heavily in the video (much to my amazement).. but I am seriously Into making this project work.. it is one of the best publication’s I have been in.. take a look.. Video Below. Link Here.
This Month has also been a good month to sell Paintings.. and GhostBox has finally sold to the wonderful Gareth Rees, My favourite Writer at present. His Esoteric and Psychogeographic themed Pieces go to places never thought possible.. all influenced by his long walks with his dog “Hendrix” On Hackney Marshes. Check out his excellent blog here
Lastly My Montage work has been given an award on the wonderful Behance website, The curators of this influential Art led site, has chosen my work from over 2 million artists.. So I am really chuffed.. If your an artist, and need a good platform to share your ideas, and works , then Hop on the Behance site Here.
Ok that is it for now.. long post.. but soo much going on.
Be Lucky. 🙂
Thought I would share with you, what, a brain block/explosion feels like. I have been sketching an idea for almost a month now, It is from a family photo, and when I look at it, makes me feel happy, and even emits a slight snigger. Now with the paintings I do, they are always personal to me, but I try to make them never exclusive to the viewer. This is harder than you think, and I spend most of my time trying to convey, these thoughts through the focus of a brush, and paints, therefore showing the expressionism of the piece, so everyone can enjoy it (hopefully).
I realised that this painting was more personal than i originally thought, so I took to bold step to obscure the faces, so to make them more Anonymous , but hopefully you will get the energy and feel for what I am thinking and feeling Through the energy. Anyway it is all work in progress, and I think It will be maybe another weeks work. Pics below of my studio, and my set up. I will post online when I am finished, as it seems to be going well. No title as yet, but I think it will be called “Eyemouth”
